The Big Show for the Big Cure Bowl-a-thon

Bowlathon Raises over $50,000 for Prostate Cancer!

WXYT AM 1270 The Sports Station hosted The Big Show for the Big Cure Bowlathon event and raised over $50,000! The event went live on air at Troy Lanes in Troy, Michigan on Thursday, May 12, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. and lasted 28 hours until Friday May 13 at 7:00 p.m.

This Radio-thon was hosted by AM 1270’s “The Big Show” with Doug Karsch and Art Regner.

The event included:

  • Guest appearances by local celebrities, sports legends and athletes
  • Fans bowling to raise funds
  • Bowling with celebrities
  • Contests and concerts
  • Hourly “Live” auctions and prizes
  • Chance to win a trip to Las Vegas with a $5 donation roll-a-strike
  • $5 donation for a photo with Larry O’Brien NBA Championship Trophy
  • Autograph sessions with local celebrities
  • Silent Auction provided by Detroit Sports Gallery
  • Live on air interview with Raj Vattikuti

Several Henry Ford and Covansys employees had a great time volunteering during the 28-hour bowlathon answering phones for pledges and helping to keep the event operating smoothly.

“In just three hours our Covansys volunteer group raised $15,000 answering phone pledges!” said Bridget Weir, Covansys Marketing Coordinator.

All proceeds will benefit the Henry Ford Vattikuti Urology Institute for prostate cancer research and treatment. The Vattikuti Urology Institute was founded in 2001 by Henry Ford Health System with an initial donation from The Vattikuti Foundation, a personal family foundation established by Raj and Padma Vattikuti to achieve their philanthropic objectives.

According to the Vattikuti Urology Institute Homepage, “The Vattikuti Urology Institute has consistently ranked among the top 30 centers in the United States by U.S. News and World Report. It is also one of the largest in the nation with nearly 30 board-certified urologists and researchers who treat more than 50,000 patients annually.”
